Top 10 films of 2017

We are two weeks into the new year of 2017! Which means a lot new interesting films! Just like every other film fan, I have a few films on my watch list I can not wait to see in cinemas. Therefore I thought it would be nice to share my top 10 list of what to watch in 2017, one film per month starting with January. Of course there are a lot more interesting films to come than just these 10, but these are my favourites for each month! Which one is on your watch list? The première dates are for in the Netherlands.

Assassin’s Creed – 5 January

The film is based on the games ans stars Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch in the lead. Thanks to a revolutionary technology, Lynch can step into the shoes of his ancestor Aguilar during the 15th century in Spain. Through his mission, he amasses a large amount of knowledge and learns some incredible skills he can use to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present time.

Fifty Shades Darker – 9 February

Everbody had their opinion about the first film, Fifty Shades of Grey, a film adaptation which was written by E.L. James. The film had its premiere two years ago and got both negative as positive reactions. Now it’s time for the second part. After the break-up between the innocent Anastasia Steel (Dakota Johnson) and the millionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), they give their turbulent relationship a second chance. Christian, however, is still struggling with his past and inner demons, while Anastasia is confronted by the woman who was before her.

Beauty and the Beast – 29March

For every Disney fan the release of the live-action version of  Beauty and the Beast is a dream coming true. The magical fairytale follows Belle’s adventure when she takes her father’s place as a prisoner in an enchanted castle. A castle which is the home of a prince in the form of a frightening beast. Eventually the two become friends, which leads to a romance. But on the other hand there is Gaston, a man who want Belle’s heart as well. In the lead parts we see  Emma Watson (Belle), Ewan McGregor (Lumiere), Dan Stevens (Beast), Luke Evans (Gaston) and Sir Ian McKellen (Pendule).

Fast & Furious 8 – 13 April

The eight part in the popular Fast & Furious-series, where cars are a very important aspect, promises to be a spectacle. Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren as newcomers join the established star cast, with Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in the lead parts. This time Dom and his family comes under great pressure when Dom takes the side of villain Cipher (Theron). 

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men tell no Tales – 24 May

The fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean-series follows once more Johnny Depp’s character Captain Jack on his adventure. This time Sparrow is looking for Poseidon’s trident. In this fantasy film about pirates Orlando Bloom is back, who was missed during the last film. Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa returns as well. Not much is known about this fifth chapter, but I guess the biggest fans are already for the premiere!

Wonder Woman – 1 June

After all the Comics movies with male superheroes in the lead, such as Batman and Superman, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is finally getting a solo movie. Before she was Wonder Woman, Diana was princess of the Amazons and a trained, invincible warrior. When the American pilot (Chris Pine) crashes on her island, he tells of a conflict that is going on in the outside world. In her belief that she can stop this threat, Diana decides to leave her island. Fighting in a devastating war, Diana discovers her full powers and its true destiny.

War for the Planet of the Apes – 13 July

In this final film within the Planet of the Apes trilogy, it is really of apes versus men. In the previous film we saw how a drug against Alzheimer’s eventual led to an army of super-intelligent apes, led by Ceasar (Andy Serkis), and almost extinction of the human race. Humanity wants its grip on Earth back, and the only way to get that is to eradicate the intelligent apes. Under the leadership of Colonel (Woody Harrelson), they go to war against Caesar and his followers.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle – 5 October

After the mixed success of Kingsman: The Secret Service, a sequel has being made. When the headquarters of Kingsman comes under fire and a new enemy makes its appearance, Agents Eggsy and Merlin must cooperate with US agents to save the world. Returning are Taron Egerton as Eggsy and Mark Strong as Merlin. Who also returns is Colin Firth, but because of the events of the previous film, the question is how e returns. Interesting new faces are Channing Tatum and Julianne Moore.

Justice League – 16 November

Another film in the world of DC Comics is Justice League, a film in which various superheroes show up. The film follows the events of Man of Steel and Batman Vs Superman. Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by the selfless act of Superman, Bruce Wayne / Batman asks for help from his new ally, Wonder Woman. Together they must face an even bigger enemy.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – 15 December

Two years before the release of this film, the seventh Star Wars film premiered. And with success. It was the beginning of a new trilogy, which takes place 20 years after Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harisson Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor. The eighth chapter follows the adventures of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Luke Skywalker, Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac). The premiere of the film is almost a year away, but the fans – me – were ready since the seventh chapter ended!

These were my 10 favorites for the new year! For some months it was difficult to make a choice, because there are several very interesting films that make their appearance. If you are looking forward to a film that did not make my list, please let me know in the comments! Happy New Movie Year!
