Captain James T. Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew are back in Star Trek Into Darkness! Kirk and his crew are on a secret mission to save a planet from disaster. They can not be discovered by the native inhabitants, but since they – along with The Enterprise – were, Kirk lost his title as captain and command over The Enterprise. Shorty after, the organization got attacked in their London headquarters and now it’s again up to Kirk and his crew of the Enterprise to find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization. This leads them to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.
The first film Star Trek, from 2009 and directed by J.J. Abrams, was quite difficult to follow. After watching it a few times I still had questions! This film is entirely different in that area. It is very easy to follow and there is no black hole involved, that takes you to the past or future. This time the threat comes from the inside out and it’s Captain Kirk and his team’s task to stop it. The big villain is Khan, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. He plays his role so well, that at some point you start feeling for the man and get sympathy. He makes it look like Marcus (Peter Weller) is the bad guy, one important man from the organization. He’s evil in some way I think but not as bad as Khan made it look like. Khan is definitely manipulative! Cumberbatch did an amazing job!
Just like the first film Kirk (Chris Pine) doesn’t follow the rules and makes his own plans. He is still very charming but arrogant and the chemistry between Kirk and Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Bones (Karl Urban) is also still there. It’s nice to see that the friendship between Kirk and Spock is still developing and that they’re not having the same problems as in the first film. The film’s score by Michael Giacchino was the same amazing tune but made the film even more spectacular. The special effects were terrific! Spock was his amazing self and of course Simon Pegg as Scotty with his weird friend were awesome. I really do like every character, they all have their own task but also need to work together as one. I do think the female characters could be improved though! Zoe Saldana’s character was still worried about her boyfriend Spock but she had an interesting part at the planet where they talk ‘Klingon’. The film keeps you interested from the beginning till the end. It has a high rate, which makes the action scenes even more exciting!
However I didn’t feel that enthusiastic about this one and I can’t really put my finger on it. Maybe because it was too much of the same? Not that it’s bad thing, it looked very impressive and it wasn’t predictable. In 2016 the third film in this franchise will hit theatres with the same cast and producers with an unknown plot. But Star Trek Into Darkness ended with Kirk and his crew going on a five years mission into space. Only Bones wasn’t that enthusiastic! But we will have to wait at least a few months before any details will be announced! Keep you posted.
