Review | The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – 2013

My dad bought the DVD and I got a poster!! YEAHHHH Well this film is an amazing sequel! Everything what happened in the first film has its effects, which are shown in this one. After winning the Hunger Games with Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and the act they had to do so they could both win, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) clearly has some issues: Nightmares, hallucinations and the fact that she and Peeta aren’t a real couple.

After winning the games, Katniss and Peeta has to make a victory tour, which brings them to all 12 districts. Along the way they find out what the impact is of their winning. During one of Katniss’ speeches something very shocking happened! It really was ridiculous and meaningless.. Back at home there are some changes happening which causes a lot of trouble. katniss-catching-fireBecause this year is the 75th Hunger Games, it’s a special one: The Quarter Quell. And therefore President Snow (Donald Sutherland) decided that every district must pick two of their previous winners. Since Katniss is the only female who won for her district, she must join The 75th Hunger Games anyway. This was a very intense moment. It was so emotional when she heard this and even her tutor, the always happy and shining Effie (Elizabeth Banks) showed emotions. I really felt how shocked, mad, sad she was. The moment when Katniss actually got ‘picked’ in front of everyone was really a sensitive moment.

For the guys it was between Peeta and their tutor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson). This moment was a bit predictable in my opinion since we all know that Peeta is the one who will join Katniss during the games. Just like the first film, we get a scene where every competitor gets introduced in the Capitol by making an entrance in the Arena (?) where Katniss puts herself and Peeta on ‘fire’. This really looked amazing! Also they appear at Ceasar’s (Stanley Tucci) show where Katniss wears this amazing white dress which transforms into a black ‘mockingjay’ dress! Wowww, beautiful. Ceasar is really an amazing character. When he laughs, I laugh! 🙂 There’s also a dance scene between Katniss and the new spell maker (Philip Seymour Hoffman). I really didn’t trust him at that moment, he is up to something..

Right before the games begin, and Katniss is launched in this ‘tube’ again something shocking happens, which I didn’t understand. Just like the first film Peeta and Katniss has to survive the games, but this time they get help. The field itself is more fierce than before, but after a few days they find out something which changes the game completely! Again a very shocking moment, which made me scream: “WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?? WHYY?? ARE THEY LIARS? I DON’T UNDERSTAND!! WHAT IS THIS FOR KIND OF A COMPLOT” This is probably the same thing Katniss thought given her look of shock and incomprehension. The final scene really leaves us viewers longing for the next film!

What I loved about this film is that it wasn’t anymore just about winning a game. Everything what happened in the first film left its mark. And both Katniss and Peeta has to deal with that, but luckily they’re not alone. There is a couple of plot twists which keeps it interesting. Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss wonderfully! She really shows us her pain and her will to fight for her life. The character of Peeta is bit dull/ boring in my opinion. I like Gale (Liam Hemsworth) more and he was only seen in the beginning and at the very end! It’s nice to see that Katniss’ sister Prim is tougher than before and to see some real emotion in Effie. The actual ending shot was a bit of a Twilight / Avatar moment, what was a bit goofy. The sequel, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1, is coming November 2014!

  1. The film was good, yeah… But did you read the books? I read them two months ago or so and I did not like them. And I think Peeta is way nicer than Gale (read the books) but Gale fits to Katniss (hate her 😉 ). God, sorry, but after I read the books I just can’t stand Katniss any more 😦

    1. No I haven’t read the books, but I was planning on it. So the characters are a bit different in the books? Why don’t you like them , very curious now 🙂
